Anime Review - UN-GO - Let Down By Its Incoherent Connection Between "Crimes"

Mystery anime involving detectives investigating strange crimes is a very interesting premise - pair that with showing blood, etc, and not some mundane crimes, it would make it so much better. UN-GO is probably an unpopular anime that I stumbled upon while searching through MyAnimeList for anime with the Mystery genre tag. Was it to my expectations? Probably not and I will explain why.

Story (8/10):
There are essentially a series of crimes that are unrelated to each other, but this serves as a introduction to the detective skills of the main characters and the unhumanely power of his partner. The series of crimes were each unique, some of the culprits were predictable, but I didn't expect some of them. Near the end of the season, it is more story-based where there is a central crime. This crime was the most severe and I didn't expect the culprit's identity.

Problem with that is that the crimes were too short, and having no relevancy to each other could make viewers dissatisfied. Furthermore, most mystery genre creates suspense or a sense of dread, but this anime doesn't do that. As a result, it didn't really engage me as much as it could have.

Characters (7/10):
The characters are not really special. The main character - detective and his partner are not your typical detective duo since they have special and other-wordly powers. Nothing special and no one that you can meme about.
Art (7/10):
The art is the standard, above par art for anime. Nothing spectacular, but not shoddy work either.

Sound (5/10):
The OP and ED wasn't music to my ears. This could be different for other people, but sometimes OP and EDs are what generate interest in the anime, which could have been a factor in why this anime is unpopular.

Enjoyment (7/10):
Having crimes that had some unpredictability was refreshing, but the lack of dread/suspense didn't make the crime interesting. It wasn't like Gosick where a sense of dread/suspense was created. Yes Gosick didn't have the best execution of mystery, but it did well in creating an atmosphere that engaged readers.

Overall (7/10):
This anime wasn't too bad compared to other popular bad mystery animes like Mayoiga. Due to its unpopularity, it will probably never be recognised as a decent mystery anime. Whilst it's not your mystery anime like Monster or Gosick, it holds its own ground by having some unpredictability in the crimes - who the culprits are and why they did it. Is it an underrated anime? Perhaps. But I wouldn't classify it as an anime that is a masterpiece that people just forgot to visit.
