Anime Movie Review: Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas)

I know I'm a bit late to the party in regards to this movie, but I'm sure when everyone saw the English name for this movie, they were perplexed due to the ridiculous nature of the title. However, when you watch the movie, you understand what it really means - it is more figurative rather than literal. The movie is around your standard length of anime movies at 1hr and 48 mins, and I somewhat enjoyed this series. Maybe I have already had some sort of bias because of how intrigued I was, but who wasn't intrigued by the premise and name of this movie.

I won't spoil too much, but the story essentially covers a high school girl who has pancreatic disease, who confides in a bookworm that is engrossed in his own world. It's an interesting relationship since we see the polar opposites of personality being together, and the journey of how one can influence another is amazing. The movie shows that everyone has the ability to change for the better, and also highlights the concept of death, and how scary death can be when you are still so young and yet you have been told you can only live for a certain period of time. It's sad to feel like that and that's why our main female protagonist with the pancreatic disease has a diary "Living with Dying".
Unfortunately, our main protagonist does meet her end, but not how one would have expected. And that took me by surprise because I thought it was gonna be some kind of long dragged out journey where the person dies slowly. Personally the abrupt death can be a bit off-putting, but I didn't really mind it too much. The final sections of the movie is definitely the most interesting because we see our main male protagonist change how they are completely - it's as if he really ate her pancreas and imparted some part of her in him. The epilogue of the movie is nice because we see some conflict resolution between the female protagonist's friend and the male protagonist. However, I felt that there were sometimes random shots that didn't fit any purpose.

Overall, it's a decent movie about "living with dying", but I feel that the main message was that one should not shut themselves and stay in their own bubble. Sometimes one must change for the better even if it's really tough, and the amazing bond between our protagonists is heartwarming yet heartbreaking to watch. But isn't that what life is and what friends/important people are for? We confide in each other, we cry, we laugh, we fight, but at the end of the day, our bond grows stronger than ever.

Overall Score: 8/10
Story: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Art: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Enjoyment: 8/10
